SUMMARY:Attendance Recovery: Data Driven Solutions for Chronic Absenteeism
DESCRIPTION:Dr. David Diehl is the Child Welfare and Attendance Program Administrator for the Sanger Unified School District. While a Director of Community Services in a small rural district facing significant challenges\, the Selma Unified School District took bold steps to address one of education’s most pressing issues—chronic absenteeism. His district launched a district-wide\, data-driven initiative that resulted in a remarkable 31% drop in chronic absenteeism across its elementary schools in just 1.5 years. This powerful session will explore the district’s tiered framework\, developed under the leadership of Dr. David Diehl\, that uses predictive data\, early warning signs\, and wraparound support to transform student attendance and lives. Learn how attendance teams\, comprised of social workers and newly hired Community Liaisons\, analyzed data to identify attendance barriers and engage families early in the school year. Discover how this model goes beyond the numbers\, integrating behavioral data\, literacy indicators\, and school-avoidance patterns to support the whole child. Dr. Diehl will also share the research and lived experiences that shaped this approach\, including insights from five major longitudinal studies and his own work with justice-involved youth. With deep personal investment stemming from his time teaching in a court school\, where he tragically lost 21 students to gang violence. Dr. Diehl offers not just a framework\, but a call to action. Join this session to gain a replicable blueprint for reducing absenteeism\, increasing student connectedness\, and preventing future dropout and delinquency—starting before 6th grade. Whether you're an administrator\, counselor\, or community partner\, you’ll leave inspired and equipped to lead meaningful change in your own district.

SUMMARY:From Initiative to Impact: Embedding Staff Wellness into School Systems
DESCRIPTION:School employees—including teachers\, administrators\, and support staff—are experiencing sustained levels of stress\, burnout\, and absenteeism that directly impact retention\, morale\, and student outcomes. Research from the RAND Corporation and the American Psychological Association underscores the urgency of addressing workplace stress in education through systemic\, rather than episodic\, responses.\n\nThis presentation highlights the development and implementation of a comprehensive Workplace Wellness Program designed specifically for school system employees. Grounded in the philosophy\, “Put on your own mask first before assisting others\,” the initiative reframes staff wellness as a leadership responsibility and organizational priority—not an optional add-on.\n\nThe session will outline how the Desert Sands Unified School District Staff Wellness Committee built a structured action plan that integrates physical\, mental\, and preventive health supports directly into the work environment. Using staff survey data and participation trends\, the program established a yearlong calendar of accessible\, interest-driven wellness opportunities designed to reduce barriers to engagement—particularly the common perception of having “no time” during the workday.\n\n

SUMMARY:Building Cultures of Care: Relational Leadership for Systemwide Wellness and Belonging
DESCRIPTION:In school communities\, moments of stress\, conflict\, or crisis can shape how people communicate\, make decisions\, and support one another. Under pressure\, even well-intentioned professionals can fall into survival-mode patterns that impact trust\, accountability\, and connection across a school system.\nThis interactive session explores how stress responses influence behavior in real time and how all partners within a school ecosystem can stay grounded and respond from their values rather than their stress reactions. Participants will learn practical strategies to recognize their own patterns\, regulate their responses under pressure\, and navigate difficult conversations with greater clarity and intention.\n\nBy the end of the session\, participants will be able to:\nRecognize survival-mode patterns in themselves and others during moments of stress or conflictUnderstand how stress responses shape relational dynamics across a school systemApply trauma-informed approaches to communication and conflict that support accountability\, repair\, and a culture of belonging\n

SUMMARY:Did We Just Become Best Friends? The Power of the Psych/Therapist Dynamic Duo
DESCRIPTION:Complex student cases often feel like a tangled ball of yarn. Is it Social Maladjustment or Emotional Disturbance? Is it substance abuse or a coping mechanism for underlying trauma? When the lines are blurred\, a single perspective isn't always enough.\n\nJoin a School Psychologist\, a Clinical Therapist\, and a District Coordinator as we unpack the "Joint Assessment Model." We will demonstrate how combining the educational eligibility lens (School Psych) with the clinical treatment lens (Therapist) creates a 3D picture of the student that neither professional could capture alone.\n\nThrough a deep dive into our most complex "mystery cases"—involving adoption dynamics\, dual diagnoses\, and murky distinctives—we will show you how to layer standardized rating scales with clinical therapeutic measures. Attendees will leave with a blueprint for collaboration that not only clarifies eligibility but paves the way for effective treatment.\n\nLearning Objectives:\nUpon completion of this session\, attendees will be able to:\n\nEstablish Defensible Best Practices: formulate a legally defensible and practically effective framework for conducting joint mental health assessments.Synthesize the Lenses: Demonstrate how merging the educational (IDEA) and clinical perspectives leads to more accurate eligibility determinations and highly targeted social-emotional IEP goals.Toolbox Integration: Identify specific intersections where standardized psychologist rating scales and therapist clinical measures complement each other to rule out (or rule in) Behavior Disorders/Social MaladjustmentCollaborative Workflow: Apply a framework for joint testing sessions and parent interviews that reduces redundancy and increases diagnostic accuracy in complex cases.

SUMMARY:Emotional Regulation: Are We Truly Processing Emotions or Just Managing Them?
DESCRIPTION:Students often arrive at school carrying emotional stress. Their nervous systems are shaped by overwhelm\, trauma\, and uncertainty. In response\, educators and counselors frequently focus on helping students regulate emotions enough to return to class. While these strategies are important\, they may not fully address the underlying emotional experience students are navigating.\n\nThis presentation explores the difference between coping\, regulation\, and true emotional processing. Participants will learn how unfinished emotional responses can remain in the body and contribute to ongoing dysregulation. Through reflection\, discussion\, and practical examples\, attendees will explore how presence\, body awareness\, and relational safety can help students move toward emotional completion and return to a more regulated and connected state.

SUMMARY:From Storm to C.A.L.M.: A Neuro-Affirming Co-Regulation Framework for ERMHS Professionals
DESCRIPTION:Move beyond compliance-based behavioral models toward a neuro-affirming\, trauma-informed co-regulation practice. Grounded in Dr. Palmer’s TEDx Talk\, this session introduces the C.A.L.M. framework—a physiological intervention for high-intensity environments. Participants will learn to prioritize nervous system safety over behavioral control\, gaining practical tools to stabilize dysregulated students while maintaining their own clinical and emotional equilibrium.\n\nParticipants will master the C.A.L.M. protocol to bridge the gap between "crisis management" and "whole-child wellness." The outcome is for ERMHS providers and educators to:\n\nIdentify the Neuro-Biological Shift: Recognize the transition from the "Social Engagement System" to "Survival Mode" before a behavioral outburst occurs.Apply Neuro-Affirming Co-Regulation: Implement the C.A.L.M. steps to de-escalate without power struggles\, honoring the student’s physiological needs.Practice Self-Stabilization: Utilize "Thermostat" strategies to remain the regulated anchor in a dysregulated environment\, reducing staff burnout and secondary trauma.

SUMMARY:Beyond De-Escalation: Aligning Classroom and Counseling to Create Lasting Behavior Change
DESCRIPTION:Educators and mental health professionals often support the same students using different strategies across settings and times. While each approach may be effective on its own\, a lack of alignment can make it difficult for students to apply those strategies during moments of high stress.\n\nThis session introduces the Escalation Accountability Sequence™\, a practical framework that helps participants understand how behavior unfolds over time and how brain states impact a student’s ability to respond to support\, instruction\, and accountability. Participants will explore why well-intentioned strategies sometimes fail in real-world settings. Then\, with this foundation in place\, participants will be introduced the DIOR Cycle™\, a collaborative process that connects classroom implementation with counseling support. Attendees will learn how to align strategies across roles\, use real-time feedback to strengthen interventions\, and build a more cohesive system that leads to lasting behavior change.
